MONICAIR is a research and development project initiated by Dutch ventilation industry and co-financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economical Affairs within the framework of the Scheme for Top Consortia for Knowledge and Innovation (TKI), Top sector Energy, Innovation contract Energy, Energy saving in the Built Environment (TKI-Energo), Theme Installations and Indoor Environment, Programme Monitoring & Control.

To date there has been no detailed research on how well market-leading ventilation systems in houses are performing in practice. MONICAIR is the first detailed 12-month long monitoring research project that aims to map the actual Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and energy performance of ventilation systems in over 60 dwellings in the Netherlands.

The MONICAIR project has been concluded on 31 December 2015.

Goals of MONICAIR

  • Determine the differences between theoretically calculated and actually present indoor air quality and the accompanying/coinciding energy use in Dutch houses. Determine the most important causes of these differences.
  • Determine the differences between theoretically calculated and actual total energy use of Dutch houses. Determine the most importand causes of these differences.
  • Develop and test propositions for both improving the current determination methods and improving measurement and control systems for ventilation and heating systems.
